5 Hospitality Careers That Are Booming in Zimbabwe Right Now

Zimbabwe's hospitality and tourism sector has seen remarkable growth over the past two years. With major hotel groups expanding their footprint, Victoria Falls receiving record visitor numbers, and corporate travel rebounding strongly, the demand for qualified hospitality professionals has never been higher.

Yet many properties still struggle to find trained, work-ready graduates. Here are five roles where the skills gap is most acute — and where a RIHBE qualification can take you directly.

1. Front Office Manager

The first face a guest sees. The person who resolves every complaint. The professional who keeps a property's front-of-house running like a precision instrument.

Trained front office professionals with genuine service skills are rare. Most hotels are willing to pay a premium for someone who can manage a reservation system, de-escalate a difficult guest, and lead a front desk team — simultaneously.

"The front office is where guests form their first and last impression of a property. Get it right, and you've won their loyalty. Get it wrong, and no amount of beautiful rooms will save you."

A RIHBE Front Office Operations graduate understands not just the technical processes, but the service philosophy behind them.

2. Food & Beverage Supervisor

Restaurants, bars, and banqueting — the revenue engine of most hotel properties. F&B supervisors who can manage both service quality and cost control are consistently among the most sought-after hospitality professionals.

Tip

If you're already working in F&B service and want to move into a supervisory role, RIHBE's part-time and block release options mean you don't have to leave your job to upgrade your qualifications.

3. Executive Housekeeper

Often overlooked, executive housekeepers carry enormous responsibility. They manage large teams, control linen and amenity budgets, maintain the cleanliness standards that define a property's reputation, and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.

Hotels across Harare and the wider region consistently report difficulty filling this role with qualified candidates. A RIHBE Housekeeping Services qualification combined with experience moves you to the front of the line.

4. Pastry Chef

Specialisation pays in culinary arts. While general kitchen staff remain in demand, pastry chefs — skilled in baking, dessert production, and confectionery — command notably higher salaries and are among the hardest culinary professionals to recruit.

RIHBE's culinary programme includes dedicated pastry lab sessions. Many of our alumni working internationally credit pastry specialisation as the skill that opened international doors.

5. Events Coordinator

Corporate events, weddings, product launches, conferences — Zimbabwe's events industry has grown significantly, and with it the need for trained coordinators who understand logistics, vendor management, budgeting, and client communication.

Unlike many hospitality roles, events coordination often offers the opportunity to work independently or build your own business relatively early in your career.

How to Position Yourself

Training is the foundation — but positioning matters. A few principles that RIHBE graduates who've built strong careers consistently demonstrate:

  • Certify and show it. A formal qualification signals seriousness to employers in ways that experience alone does not.
  • Start anywhere, but start. The graduates who advance fastest are those who entered the industry at any level and demonstrated commitment.
  • Network within the industry. Zimbabwe's hospitality sector is smaller than it looks. Relationships matter enormously.
